Recommended Software
OTA Install: install from device, using web browser.
Downloads: save file to PC, then install with BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
Device Setup
- Options > Security: assign device password. Increase lock timeout if using ebook reader.
- Options > Screen: reduce backlight brightness to 10% to extend battery life. Backlight will be automatically increased to 100% when the device detects the presence of bright light.
- Options > Screen: increase trackball sensitivity to 90%.
- Phone > General Options: turn off dialing from home screen. Allows hotkey selection of applications (M=messages, T=tasks, L=calendar, A=address, B=browser, F=profiles, D=memo, R=alarm, U=calculator) and speed-dial key assignment.
- Phone > Call Logging: show all calls in message list.
- Calendar > Options > disable quick entry : allows hot-key (W, M, A) navigation to weekly, monthly and agenda views
- Options > Owner: specify contact email in case lost device is found by good samaritan :)
- Options > Spell Check: spell check email before sending
- Options > Advanced Options > Browser : BES (Corporate VPN) or BIS (Internet) browser
- Profiles > Edit: disable LED repeat notification for all events except Phone & SMS/MMS

AT&T Carrier Setup
- Device Registration & Personal email - Blackberry Internet Service (BIS)
- Login at https://att.blackberry.com
- Register device (if not already done by AT&T): Settings -> Change Device, enter IMEI & PIN (view on device by pressing Alt-CAPS-H). Registration email confirmation will be sent to device.
- Add an existing email account -> Set up account
- Corporate email: Options > Advanced Options > Enterprise Email Activation > Enter email and password provided by Corporate IT Admin
- Modem
- Unlock phone to use another carrier's SIM card during international travel. AT&T Customer Service will provide unlock code if you have been a customer for more than 90 days. Five day turnaround for AT&T to send you an email with the unlock code.
- Options > Advanced Options > Sim Card
- Type MEPD
- Type MEP2
- Enter unlock code
