Intel CA810E and Symbios / LSI Logic 53C896 SCSI

Symptoms: CA810E motherboard hangs on boot when SCSI drive is present and connected to LSI Logic low-profile Ultra2 SCSI adapter. Bus scan detects drive and reports that SCSI bios is loaded. Bootable ATAPI cdrom is ignored. SCSI configuration menu is accessible and functional.

Resolution:

  • Update ca810e bios to P8, March 2001 ( mirror ).
  • Update LSI Logic 53C896 bios to 4.19 ( mirror ).
  • Reboot. Ctrl-C to enter SCSI config menu. F2 to select Global Properties. Cursor down to Support Interrupt. Space bar to toggle from Hook Interrupt to Bypass Interrupt Hook.

Explanation: from the LSI Logic bios update documentation:

On certain platforms, the system BIOS uses the INT40h interrupt chain in a non-standard way. On these platforms, you should use the "Bypass Interrupt Hook" setting. This setting prevents a hook into the INT40h chain. ... Note: Try toggling this value if your machine fails to boot a CD-ROM in floppy emulation mode.
