SMIL Viewer vs Author
Until I write some actual documentation, will try to answer questions here. This one is about software requirements.
A presentation is viewed and navigated in RealPlayer.
A browser, email or IM client downloads the primary SMIL (XML) index file and sends it to RealPlayer, which in turn downloads any included video, image or text streams.
Presentation viewers can either:
(a) Select "Open Location" in RealPlayer, enter the URL
or
(b) Click on the URL in a browser. The URL is actually a directory containing an index.smil file, which will be sent to RealPlayer by the browser
Presentation authors need:
- Perl 5.005 or later, on any platform
- a text editor to enter the index points
- a web server to publish the generated files
- to configure the web server to use index.smil as a DirectoryIndex
